10 Questions to Ask Before You Book a Boat in Miami

Miami

Ten questions, two minutes. Any legitimate operator answers them without hesitating — and the ones who cannot are telling you something.

Booking a boat in Miami takes minutes. Checking that it is legal, safe and priced honestly takes about two more. These are the ten questions worth asking — of any operator, on any platform. A real business answers them easily; hesitation is information too.

The captain and the boat

  1. Who is the captain, and what Coast Guard credential do they hold? The Coast Guard itself urges passengers to check that the captain holds a Merchant Mariner Credential — you can verify one with its credential verification tool using the captain's last name and reference number.
  2. How many paying guests can the boat legally carry? Up to six on an uninspected boat with a "six-pack" captain. More than six requires a Coast Guard Certificate of Inspection — which you can look up by vessel name in the public PSIX database .
  3. Is the captain provided by you, or am I renting the boat without crew? If the owner supplies the captain, it is a passenger charter — not a "bareboat" rental. See the bareboat loophole .
  4. What is the safety plan? Life jackets for every person on board, and a briefing before you leave the dock.

The price

  1. Is the price for the whole boat or per person? Boat rentals are almost always priced for the whole boat; a per-person quote looks very different.
  2. What is included — fuel, captain, gratuity, service fee? Fuel is the most common surprise. Our breakdown of what a Miami boat rental costs lists every line.
  3. Is there a security deposit, and is it a hold or a charge? A deposit should be refundable, and ideally a hold on your card rather than money taken. More in how a boat rental deposit works .

The booking

  1. How do I pay? Credit card or an on-platform payment you can dispute. Zelle, wire, cash, gift cards and crypto are where scams live — see how to spot a boat rental scam .
  2. What happens if the weather cancels the trip? Ask who decides and whether you get a refund or a new date — in writing. See weather cancellations .
  3. Where exactly do we board, and who do I contact on the day? A real marina or dock address and a contact who is not just the person who took your money.

On VesselParty every listing shows the boat's capacity, what is included, the cancellation and weather policies, and the all-in price before you pay — on-platform.

Common questions

What should I ask before renting a boat in Miami?

Ask about the captain's Coast Guard credential, how many paying guests the boat can legally carry, whether the owner provides the captain, the safety plan, what the price includes, the deposit, how you pay, the weather policy and exactly where you board.

How do I know if a boat charter is legitimate?

A legitimate charter answers questions about the captain's credential and passenger limits without hesitation, shows its policies in writing, gives you a real boarding address and takes payment in a way you can dispute, such as a credit card or an on-platform payment.
